Great care has been taken in the design of the BriteLight
lasers to ensure that the output is close to diffraction limited
even when operating at full power. Amplification of the carefully
controlled output from the master oscillator is done first
in a double pass pre-amplifier and secondly in a dual-head
four pass power amplifier using only passive components. The
use of multi-pass amplification in the two amplifiers stages
allows for more efficient energy extraction which in turn allows
for achieving the desired energy output level with proportionally
less pump power as compared to single pass amplifiers.
When operating the laser at 75 W of average power
and 250 mJ/pulse the beam divergence is better than 2x diffraction
limit (DL) and at 125 W of average power (250 mJ/pulse) still
better than 3.5x DL.
